Synopsis:
Squadron Leader Veer Pratap Singh is a rescue pilot with the Indian Air Force, who risks his own life to save the lives of others. One day, on duty, he comes across a stranded Zaara... a girl from Pakistan. Zaara, a carefree, sprightly girl has come to India to fulfill her surrogate mother's dying wish. She meets with a bus accident leaving her stranded in a foreign land.

Veer saves her life... and his life is never the same again...
Twenty-two years later, Saamiya Siddiqui, a Pakistani lawyer on her first case, finds herself face-to-face with an ageing Veer Pratap Singh. He has languished in a Pakistan jail cell for 22 years and has not spoken to anyone all these years - and no one knows why.

Yash Chopra, der Altmeister des Indischen Films, hat hier ein Meisterwerk geschaffen. Die berührende Geschichte steht schon weiter oben sehr ausführlich beschrieben. Es ist ein ruhiger Film, der von seinen langen Einstellungen und emotionalem Tiefgang lebt. Eine Geschichte, die wie ein Märchen um die große Liebe des Lebens anmutet und die Hauptdarsteller (ein einmaliger Shahrukh Khan, eine beeindruckende Preity Zinta und eine starke Rani Mukherjee) zu ungeahnten schauspielerischen Höhen führt.
Die Worte des Films sind von großer poetischer Schönheit, blumig aber doch echt und berührend und die Musik ist einfach herrlich! Der Film kommt ohne grelle Tanz- und Singszenen aus, was den Film echt wirken lässt. Es gibt wohl einige Tanzszenen aber die scheinen ganz natürlich aus der Handlung heraus zu fließen. Beim Betrachten des Films kam mir immer wieder der Gedanke, dass man darin die Essenz der Liebe aus Yash Chopras Leben sieht. Man merkt, es ist ein Film eines reifen Menschen, der die Tiefe und Schönheit einer echten Liebe erfahren hat und sie für uns alle sichtbar machte. Nicht nur, das die Liebe zwischen Veer und Zaara eindrücklichst geschildert wird, wird auch die oftmals problembeladene Liebes-und Leidensgeschichte zwischen Indien und Pakistan dabei ins Bild gesetzt. Es ist somit auch eine gewisse Aufarbeitung jüngster Geschichte zwischen diesen beiden Ländern. Yash Chopra lässt seinen Gedanken darüber in der letzten Szene im Gericht freien Lauf. Veer spricht die Worte, die ihm aus dem Herzen kamen.
Ich war wirklich berührt und saß noch nach dem Ende des Films ruhig auf meinem Sofa um die Eindrücke nachzukosten, wie nach einer ausgezeichneten Speise eines Fünf-Haubenkochs...:)
