Old Monk Gold Reserve Rum (12 years old)
This is a softer, more sophisticated version of the popular Old Monk 7 Year Old rum from India. This was distilled from molasses and aged for a minimum of 12 years in oak barrels. It is dryer and spicier than its younger sibling with complex notes of cinnamon, clove and chocolate. It drinks beautifully on its own, and also makes a high quality mixer.
A well aged version of this popular Indian rum.
Old Monk is one of those cult classics that you sometimes get in the spirits world – the company spend no money at all on advertising, and rely entirely on word of mouth for their popularity. Nevertheless, Old Monk is a definitive sleeper hit: the rum was first launched back in 1954, and has been gaining in popularity ever since. Indeed, it is the second bestselling dark rum in the world, likely thanks to the population of its home country.
The spirit is distilled from molasses, and has been aged for a minimum of 12 years. It is produced by Mohan Meakin Limited in the Ghaziabad area of Uttar Pradesh, India.
Old Monk 12 Year Old itself is a rich, spicy spirit, offering notes of cinnamon, cloves, tobacco, black pepper, almond, hazelnut, stewed black tea, bitter nuttiness, vanilla, chocolate, dark brown sugar, walnuts and oak.
Bottled at just under 42.8% ABV this rum has a good, medium body and plenty of toasty warmth.
Enjoyable served neat, this will also elevate mixed drinks to the next level.
